Aging in Community – A New York First Model Film Screening

A group of people seated in a gymnasium in New York watch an Aging in Community film screening projected onto a screen at the front of the room.

On Monday, July 7th, members of the Commonpoint Older Adult Services Community gathered at the Commonpoint Sam Field Center gym for a special screening of Aging in Community, a new documentary produced by the New York State Office for the Aging. The film features residents and staff from the Commonpoint Deepdale CARES NORC and two other NORC programs, highlighting the value of aging with support in a connected community.

The event was attended by several local leaders and partners, including Kristin Smith from the New York State Office for the Aging, Assembly Member Ed Braunstein, Council Member Linda Lee, a representative from the office of U.S. Representative Tom Suozzi, and State Senator Toby Ann Stavisky. Their commitment to supporting programs for older adults in aging safely are greatly appreciated.

Kristin Smith opened the event by recognizing the efforts of the community and presented awards to Bess Friedman, a Deepdale CARES NORC resident and documentary participant, and a nurse for their contributions to the program.

The screening was followed by a brief Q&A session, where attendees shared thoughts on the film and the importance of sustaining programs like NORC. It was a meaningful gathering that reflected the strength of community partnerships and the everyday impact of aging in place initiatives.
