Barbara Becker Bruno
Assistant Vice President of Older Adult Services
Barbara Becker Bruno, LCSW, is the Assistant Vice President for Older Adult Services. She came to the agency in 2017, just in time to experience the merger of the Samuel Field Y and Central Queens Y under the Commonpoint umbrella. In her role, Barbara currently oversees a portfolio of 9 programs with the common goal of assisting adults over the age of 60 to age in place, in the communities they love, safely, with dignity and a sense of personal fulfillment. Barbara has specialized in working with older adults in a variety of settings since 2004, having been inspired by the close relationships she enjoyed with her paternal grandparents, and great aunts and uncles all of whom lived into their 90’s. All born in Germany, some had emigrated to the United States prior to World War II, some came to the US after having survived the Holocaust, and some became Zionists and settled in Palestine before Israel became a State.
When not working, Barbara enjoys traveling and has been on 21 cruises with her husband of 41 years. Travel has always been an important part of her life, with her father having worked for the airlines. She lived in Luxembourg and Puerto Rico while in the first grade, and Israel as a teenager. She first learned to add and subtract in German when attending a Catholic School in Luxembourg. She has studied several foreign languages including Hebrew, Spanish, Italian and Russian, but does not speak any of them fluently.
Barbara is proud to be part of the Commonpoint family and to lead a team of the most dedicated, compassionate and supportive individuals she has had the pleasure of working with in her 40+ years as a Social Worker. She enjoys mentoring her staff to do their best work and is grateful to the agency for supporting professional growth within the organization.
