Commonpoint Provides 100 Bukharian Families with Food this Passover Season

A group of Bukharian families stands behind carts and boxes filled with packaged goods in a community center lobby, preparing for Passover.

As the Passover season approaches, Commonpoint stepped up and addressed a community crisis, delivering Passover food packages to 100 Bukharian families that belong to the Bukharian Jewish Community Center (BJCC) in Forest Hills, Queens, last Wednesday. This year marks the third annual Commonpoint and BJCC Passover food delivery partnership.

“This truly was a blessing. I can’t express how grateful I am that Commonpoint and our synagogue came together to show up for our community and honor the words of the opening Passover seder: “All who are hungry, let them come and eat. All who are in need, let them come celebrate Passover with us,” says Josef Khaimov, President of the shul at BJCC.

Commonpoint’s Resilience team, a program supporting some of the more vulnerable community members and those experiencing crisis, answered the call when the Bukharian Jewish Community Center reached out on behalf of families suffering financial hardship. Commonpoint volunteers of various ages and ability levels and members of the Resilience team came together to package bags of kosher for Passover items, including grape juice, oil, rice, macaroons, gefilte fish, and matzo.

“The costs of these Passover items can be quite expensive, especially considering the city’s current inflation and rising food costs.  I’m so glad we could purchase the food for these families and make their holidays feel warmer,” says Leslie Kraut, Senior Director of the Resilience Program at Commonpoint.

Through volunteer and staff efforts, Commonpoint is also preparing to deliver 200+ Passover meals to homebound older adults and those suffering financial strain throughout Queens.
